High School Educational Advising

Often in today’s busy high schools it is difficult to get enough time with a guidance counselor to find answers to your questions or to make sure you are on the right academic track.

Upperhand Counsellors understand that examining the big picture involves knowing which courses to take as well as what options and programs are available at your high school. Proper course planning ensures that high school students graduate without unexpected surprises and have the necessary requirements to apply to their preferred post-secondary programs.

Services include:
  • Informing students of mandatory course requirements for an Alberta high school diploma
  • Assisting in the selection of high school courses and trajectories and creating a high school planning chart
  • Program planning throughout high school in alignment with future post-secondary program aspirations
  • Investigating various high school offerings including International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) Programs, Career and Technology Studies, Dual-Credit, Work Experience, and Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP)
  • Exploring summer educational programs in Canada and elsewhere
  • Examining the options for a fourth year/upgrading year while a student is still funded by Alberta Education (under 21 years old)
